When considering the diagnosis, we must consider the diagnostic hierarchy pyramid (see the differential diagnosis page under 'Assessment'). 


Remember- the disorders at the bottom of the diagnostic pyramid might be more common but you need to start at the top and treat/exclude possible organic first before you can continue down the list. Then psychosis, then mood etc. Otherwise will not be effective and it could mean you have missed an important diagnosis with serious implications.
